Teacher Compensation in the News

Education Week today has a discussion of teacher compensation across the 50 states, based on National Education Association data. According to the article, "There's a $40,000 difference between what the average teacher in New York makes, and what the average teacher in Mississippi makes," with the 2017-2018 average teacher compensation in New York being $84,227and the average teacher compensation in Mississippi being $44,926 (all other states' average teacher salaries fell somewhere in between).

Meanwhile, a recent post by the Economic Policy Institute reports that the "teacher weekly wage penalty" -- referring to "the percent by which public school teachers are paid less in wages and compensation than other college-educated workers" -- has risen to 21.4% as of 2018 (up from 12% in 2004).
